are exhausted from mine ventilation systems and remains unexploited.

mining operations to profit from electrical power generation and CMM's. The selling of electrical power coupled
with carbon credits allow these projects the to funded outside company capitol. This revenue stream secures
the required financing to complete the projects.
Ventilation Air Methane Thermal Oxidizers are used to destroy Ventilation Air Methane from
underground shafts. These shafts provide exhaust for underground mining workers protection. Methane
pollutants are hydrocarbon based and when destroyed via thermal combustion they are chemically changed
to form CO2 and H2O. Mining concentrations of ventilation air exhausts are very dilute typically below 1% and
often below 0.5%.
Equipment is designed to operate on very low concentrations. Exhausts streams with average VAM
concentrations below 0.8 percent may add supplemental drained methane or supplemental fuel may be used
to increase the concentration to a sustainable value. Other methods may include the reduction of fresh air
concentration in order to have a methane value great enough to self sustain the thermal oxidizer. Flow rates
are so high that ventilation air methane constitutes the largest source of methane at most mines.
These exhausts not only waste energy but contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions. Methane has a global warming potential that is 23 times that of carbon dioxide.
Thermal oxidation is the most widely accepted air pollution control technologies used in industrial
applications. Ventilation Air Methane Thermal Oxidizers are commonly referred to as a VAMTOX System.
They are very specific and extremely efficient – energy recovery efficiency may reach 90%,
although most methane systems operate in the 85% to 90% efficiency range in part due to the
high ventilation air methane volumes.
Thermal efficiency is achieved through the storage of combustion heat by dense ceramic stoneware.
Ventilation Air Methane Thermal Oxidizers are used for the very low methane concentrations with larger
process air requirements. These thermal oxidation systems are used during long continuous 24 hour
operations. Oxidizer systems are capable of up to 98+% Methane (CH4) destruction efficiencies.
Ventilation Air Methane Thermal Oxidizers may be designed with multiple hot air bypass systems for high
spike levels of methane during the changing mining operation. Other additional equipment such as re-
circulation heat exchanger's and micro turbine power generation systems may be implemented to capture
exhausted energy for conversion.
Other system features such as O2 monitoring can reduce any possible carbon monoxide and/or nitrous
oxide. Methane streams allow the VAMTOX to operate at greatly reduced and often zero fuel
usage, which makes these systems ideal for mine shaft ventilation operations.
Located on the system is a set of valves and dampers that direct the methane flow across the ceramic bed.
On system start up the system preheats and raises the temperature of the heat exchange material in the
oxidizer bed to or above the auto-oxidation temperature, these temperatures can vary greatly between
oxidizer systems. Most thermal oxidizer systems operate between (850°C 1562°F and 1,000°C or 1,832°F),
after the pre-heating stage the fuel system is turned off and methane process flow is initiated. When
the ventilation air methane reaches the preheated ceramic media bed, heat from the combustion is released.
This heat is transferred to the next bed, thereby maintaining its temperature at or above the temperature
necessary to support auto-thermal operation. It should be noted that the thermal oxidation process is flame-
less and following the initial media bed preheating, requires no auxiliary fuel so long as there is a
methane concentration above 0.8%.
