Introduction
The paint and coating industry is currently and has been under fire for some time by
employees, local residents and EPA officials to control emissions. These unwanted odors and
emissions can cause health threats, consequently incorporating newer products which have
lower emission levels such as a
biological oxidation system can eliminate the associated
high cost of thermal oxidation
, while providing a method to reduce public concern and
conform to operating permit requirements.   

What does the carbon due in the system?
So, what is a Granulated Activated Crbon Biological Oxidation System? It is the method to
describe a system of trapping solvents by use of activated carbon filter and destruction by
microorganisms. This filter or “carbon” has a vast surface area with one gram equaling the
size of a soccer field, so you can imagine how large of surface area would be represented by
thousands of pounds. The carbon bed has the ability to trap up to 20% by weight of emissions
or solvents. These carbons are in place and when these systems are filled the solvents the
carbon reaches a
"saturation point" at which time the carbon is unable to accept any more
solvent, this is called the
"breakthrough point". It is at this point the solvents or emissions will
push through the granulated activated carbon without entrapment.   

What is a biological oxidizer system?
Biological oxidation is the naturally occurring process of treating air and water with bacteria
and microbes. This oxidation occurs naturally in our daily life’s, these organisms are capable
of digesting just about any hydrocarbon substance, that either is manufactured or that occurs
in nature. Conventional biological filters and oxidizers have been used for many years; most
have been in operation in Japan and Europe. In the past these have been very large operating
systems with single layer mulch or organic media to act the filtration mechanism. Some as
large as soccer fields, the size has limited its popularity in the U.S. and most of these systems
were found to be impractical for industrial units.

Newer more modern designed biological oxidizers use a variety of products to increase the
efficiency of treating VOC's and HAP's and thus reduce their size from something like a soccer
field to a large proper metabolism by the micro organisms. Second, the granulated activated
carbon that supports the entrapment is structured in a way to increase the effective surface
area and allow multiple layers. A concise way to put it, is the system is an engineered
biological-network that traps the emissions then kitchen. Emission laden waste off-gases are
required to operate between 40°F and 120°F to maintain delivers the emissions to the
organisms where the organisms behave as if they are at a luncheon that never ends the with
emissions and solvents becoming their main staple. Newer developed forms of
microorganisms produce no biomass and does not require cleaning or any waste treatment.

Thermal Oxidation v. Carbon Biofiltration Technology Costs
Often solvent processes have a high volume waste process stream with a lower levels of
solvents. These emissions can be extremely expensive to treat with thermal oxidation
technologies because of the amount of natural gas required to maintain combustion
temperatures which are typically 1550°F.

Most thermal technologies also produce secondary contaminants like nitrogen oxides, as do the thermal regeneration systems. Biological Oxidizers makes use of the biological
energy from the hydrocarbons. As part of regular ongoing maintenance, the addition of bacterial organisms ranging between one month to three months depending on the
destruction efficiency required for regulatory compliance. Systems can be designed to achieve >99% destruction or conversion rate efficiency.

Often the regulatory approach has pushed toward Maximum Available Control Technology (MACT), which leans towards requiring a higher level of treatment for the target pollutant
with only narrow contemplation of the cost. Granulated Activated Carbon Biological Oxidizers are currently achieving consistent removal efficiencies >99 percent. Carbon Bed
Biological Oxidizers are an energy-efficient technology for VOC's, HAP's and Odor control that can meet the demand of regulatory agencies. Regulatory agencies are more receptive
to biological oxidation, and are beginning to recognize the benefits of pollution avoidance of NOx, CO and CO2 reduction while reducing the carbon footprint and energy savings.

Industrial Paint Booths
A 7,000 SCFM Biological Oxidizer was placed in service on a paint spraying operation in the southern U.S, the company is a large coater of metal components. Some of these
coatings have relatively high concentrations of VOC's and are required to have a Title V EPA permit. The biological oxidizer system (pictured below) is maintaining greater than the
required operating permit for removal of the various HAP's and VOC's.

Conclusion
Granulated Activated Carbon Biological Oxidizer Systems is a cost-effective and viable technology for VOC's, HAP's and odor control that has significant promise for improved air
