|Low BTU Landfill Gas Turned Into Renewable Engery
The most current treatment of landfill gases has been flaring to remove landfill gases, but
often these lower LG Btu feed stocks are only an expense to the landfill operation and
produce NOx and CO formation during the process.
Many states have banned the sale of landfill gas due to the minor and trace amounts of
halogenated hydrocarbons within the LG gas. This newly developed gas scrubber system
offers years of dependable natural gas production, at a cost that is affordable to the landfill
American Environmental Fabrication & Supply has developed a low cost, low energy landfill
gas scrubbing and enrichment system that will convert low Btu Landfill Gas “LG” into a
valuable renewable energy source. The packaged system provides an innovative approach to
many of the problems associated with landfill gas. The unique trace element removal system
provides separation of the LF gas impurities such as H2S, SO2, Mercaptans, Halogenated
Hydrocarbons and other higher molecular weighted constitutes from the landfill gas.
The pioneering process starts by a non steam rejuvenating granulated carbon gas separation
system which adsorbs and separates the various LF gases. The higher molecular weighted LF
gases are adsorbed and converted into CO2 and H2O. The initial separation system allows the
lower hydrocarbons to be converted into CO2 and water. Methane, Ethane and Propane pass
readily through the primary system in a closed loop technique and continue to the secondary
pressurized adsorption system.
After the initial higher molecular weighted LF gas adsorption or separation occurs the
remaining lower system known as a Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) system is supplied
by a gas compression station between the exhaust of the primary trace element scrubber and
the PSA system. The PSA The secondary adsorption process (PSA) binds the CO2 to the
molecular sieve material. The next process phase within the continuous PSA system is to
evacuate the remaining CO2. This evacuation phase or LF sweetening process, removes the
high amount of CO2 and brings the LF Btu rating high enough (950 BTU) to be sold to natural
gas processors. After the evacuation of the CO2.
The recaptured LF feedstock may be used by many existing technologies i.e. Combustion
Micro Turbine, Combustible Heat Source for Organic Rankin Cycle Turbines or Sold Directly
to Natural Gas Pipeline.
Since the methane concentration in a landfill decreases, slowly over time, this purification
technology can also extend the useful lifetime of the landfill gas for electricity generation or
natural gas sales by readily increasing the combustible content as the methane
concentration. This cost effective and valuable approach allows all LF gas to be utilized in
many ways without the constraint of any one application. More importantly this closed loop
system provides a low cost solution to newly adopted PSD GHG regulations for all Landfill
