|Biogas and Landfill Processing Plants To High B.t.u. Fuel
American Environmental Fabrication and Supply fabricates and installs Biogas and Landfill
Gas to Pipeline (high BTU) plants. The typical Biogas or landfill gas composition is
approximately 50-56% methane, 40-45% carbon dioxide, and 2-3% nitrogen and other
American Environmental scrubs the inlet raw gas removing the H2S, VOC's, siloxane and any
particulates using low pressure blowers, scrubbers and separators to reduce the overall plant
energy consumption. After removal of the smaller amounts of hazardous compounds the
blowers then process the large amount of CO2 contained in the raw gas at very low pressure
below 3 psig.
Removing the CO2 gas at low pressure reduces the energy requirement for the overall plant.
The CO2 is very pure and may be used as a separate profit stream. The off gas CO2 is not
required to be flared due to the prior plant conditioning methods and is of high quality.
After removal of the H2S, CO2, VOC's and Siloxane the gas contains only the inerts such as
Nitrogen, Oxygen and a small amount of CO2 less than 1%. However the pipeline
transmission requires removal of the Oxygen down to typically less than 10ppm. Therefore
removal of excess Oxygen is required to meet such pipeline requirements. The plant uses a
high temperature catalytic process to remove the 1.5% Oxygen to below the 10ppm level.
The plant further process the raw Biogas and Landfill gas to remove any remaining moisture
to -20F which is well below the standard pipeline quality of 20F or 7lbs/MMBTU. The
production of high-BTU pipeline quality gas from Biogas and Landfill Gas requires extensive
gas separation and processing to remove all moisture, trace components, carbon dioxide,
H2S and any siloxane from the raw gas.
After the gas processing is completed the methane gas is very pure with a heating value
above 950 B.t.u. per standard cubic foot (BTU/scf). This is a very close equivalent to the
energy content of standard natural gas, which is 95% methane, and has a typical heating
value of approximately 1020 BTU/scf. The higher B.t.u. value is due to the presence of other
higher molecular weighted hydrocarbons such as ethane and propane.
Biogas and Landfill Gas must meet strict quality gas standards before the gas may be
injected into the utility company pipelines and further distributed and sold out of the pipeline
to customers. The plant equipment will analyze the gas during the various phases in order to
guarantee the gas quality before injection into the pipeline. The High BTU product may also
be compressed to levels approximately 3,000 psi.
High pressure methane gas is referred to as CNG or Compressed Natural Gas. This form of
fuel is extremely economical, and some sanitation districts and landfill owners have found
CNG fueled vehicle fleets a significant source of cost-containment. CNG can also be used
to power the Landfill or Biogas plants themselves.
